A book in a fourth-grade classroom in Ames caused concern for one Iowa parent. The book is called “All’s Faire in Middle School.” A portion of the book contains strong overtones that likely are not appropriate for fourth-grade students.

This portion of the book concerned the parent:

“Tyler slid Sydney’s halter top off her tanned shoulders…”

The next page contains the word “sex.”

Here are some other pages shared that caused concern:

In addition to the Iowa parent’s concern, a reviewer on Amazon said the book is “definitely not appropriate for fifth- and sixth-graders.”

The reviewer said they were “shocked” at the book’s contents considering it was recommended for 4-8 grades.

Another Amazon review reads:

“Section where a character has a porno book or something. NOT appropriate for young middle schoolers. Leave the sex ed to the parents!”

And another:

“This book is nothing but trash. I consider this book completely INAPPROPRIATE. I cannot believe this book was geared towards 9-12 year olds…This is complete filth.

As for the Iowa situation, the parent said the teacher told them she was unaware of the content of the book. The teacher also noted it is suggested for fourth grade. However, the teacher will review the book further and decide whether to pull it or not.
