On Tuesday, Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) introduced the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill that would ban federal funding from going to athletic programs that allow biological males to compete in activities designated for women or girls. The bill would also define “sex” under Title IX as being “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”

The legislation comes as incidences of biological males dominating women’s athletic events are on the rise, including in Connecticut where multiple female high school athletes are suing the state’s athletic conference for violating Title IX after losing out on titles and competitive opportunities to biological male runners.

The bill is co-sponsored by Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).

Terry Schilling, executive director at American Principles Project, released the following statement strongly endorsing the legislation:

“Women’s sports are under severe threat in 2020. Despite the radical left’s attempts at gaslighting, this is indisputable. Three high school girl athletes in Connecticut are currently in federal court fighting for their right to a fair playing field, and if current trends hold, many more cases are likely to follow.

“While President Trump and his administration have taken important steps to defend women’s sports, female athletes have also been searching for a leader in Congress to stand up for them. Today, Sen. Kelly Loeffler has courageously stepped forward to be that leader.

“After years of involvement in women’s sports, Sen. Loeffler clearly understands the importance of offering female athletes an equal opportunity to compete. She has also distinguished herself in the Senate for refusing to back down from the most important fights — of which this is most certainly one.

“We commend Sen. Loeffler for introducing the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, and we encourage every conservative lawmaker concerned about the future of women’s sports to support this bill. As numerous polls have shown, the American people are with us in this battle. If opportunities for women and girl athletes are to be safeguarded for the next generation, we must join together and get this done.”

Last week, an American Principles Project PAC digital ad attacking Joe Biden and Democrats for supporting policies that would threaten women’s sports was removed from Facebook after a review by PolitiFact found it was “missing context.” You can read more about that story at The Federalist here.
