Bettendorf parent Melissa Zumodome asked the school board two pertinent questions on Thursday night. Both questions were in relation to the district’s policy on transgender students.

First, Zumodome asked the district to be more transparent when it is setting such policies and discussing them with staff, especially if the district is truly worried about what it considers “misinformation” getting out about the policies.

Second, she asked who on the board has done the research on what is actually safe for transgender students.

“Who has done their research on how safe the process of transgendering a child is,” she asked. “Anyone in here? Have you done your research over the years to prove that it’s safe for these children to behave in this manner? What kind of treatment do they go on? What’s the process? Do they end up living a healthy, long life? Or does it end in suicide? Does it end in destroying them genetically, biologically? Be very careful when you use the word and say that we’re trying to keep all children safe. Do your research on the impact of what happens when a child does go through the process of wanting to transgender and the age  of when it starts and tell me it’s safe.”
