During Senate debate on a proposed constitutional amendment that states there is no right to an abortion or taxpayer funding of abortion in the Iowa Constitution, Sen. Joe Bolkcom made a couple of eye-raising comments.

This was the first:

“Abortion is normal. Abortion is nothing to be ashamed of. Abortion is health care.”

Abortion may indeed be “normal,” for those who have lost any sensitivity to an unborn baby having his or her life ended in the mother’s womb.

It certainly isn’t natural.

If abortion is normal, it’s only because we’ve allowed it to become normal. There is nothing normal about a mother choosing death over life for her son or daughter.

It is sad, heartbreaking and unfortunate that there are circumstances in which a mother believes her best option is to end her baby’s life.

And while Bolkcom can say abortion is nothing to be ashamed of, it is certainly not something to be proud of, is it?
