Name: Sen. Dan Dawson, Republican

Office/District: State Senate District 8

Hometown: Council Bluffs

Profession: Law enforcement

Why running for office: “I’m seeking re-election to finish the work that we started. When I ran and we took the majority in 2017, the biggest issue I ran on was trying to affect the individual’s basic status in life and raise that. How the government operates and affects their lives as well as their tax liabilities and all sorts of things, I want to try to put Council Bluffs and Carter Lake in a more competitive position. And, we did a lot of that. In 2018, we passed the largest tax reform in Iowa history. That doesn’t get completed until 2023. We did a series of things, for instance, the constitutional language to give Iowa voters the opportunity to insert the Second Amendment language into the Constitution. That needs to go through another general assembly as well. There’s a whole slew of issues out there where we’ve started a lot of good work but a lot of that is contingent on the next general assembly and giving Iowans the opportunity in 2022 to affirm at the ballot box and to complete the tax reform.

“The biggest reason I’m running is I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish as well as the budget discipline. I just want to complete the work — whether it be in my district or any district across the state of Iowa. A lot of these measures that we’ve put into place, these issues we’ve started to move forward are contingent upon the next general assembly and us being able to complete the work that we started. That’s the biggest reason why I’m running — to complete the work we started.”
