It has been about two weeks since Carl Bernstein accused 21 Republican senators of “repeatedly expressing contempt” for President Donald J. Trump. Some of the names on his list were not surprising. Others raised eyebrows.

It took Iowans by surprise to see senior U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley on the list.

Michael Zona, a spokesman for Grassley, denied the claim.

“Mr. Bernstein’s sources clearly aren’t what they used to be,” he said. “This simply isn’t true.”

Zona said that Grassley has been a “strong support” of the President, yet has also kept no secrets when he disagrees when he disagrees with Trump.

“There is no difference between what Sen. Grassley says publicly and privately,” he said. “Washington journalists might be wise to reconsider trafficking in baseless second- and third-hand rumor. It may restore some lost credibility.”
