We have highlighted Democrat State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott before. The “Sinister Minister” is a champion for the “right” to intentionally end an unborn baby’s life (abortion) and staunch defender of obscene, pornographic materials in Iowa school libraries.

The “ordained ELCA minister” is now leading a crusade against providing Iowa families with expanded choice in education. She has, perhaps more than any other Iowa legislator, used the term “voucher” to describe the Education Savings Account bill.

One would think a minister would be more honest than that since the bill has nothing to do with vouchers.

“This is a shitty, disrespectful, cruel thing to do to Iowans,” said the minister who supports the legal, intentional ending of an unborn baby’s life. “You deserve to have a voice when it comes to our kids. But they doing everything they can to take away your opportunity to speak. The Republican Majority needs to hear it. Act now.”

There’s a lot packed into that one tweet that would highlight her hypocrisy when comparing this statement to her support for the intentional ending of an unborn baby’s life. But perhaps I’ll dig more into that in another article…

Trone Garriott sounded the alarm that the voucher bill would move fast and Iowans weren’t even being allowed to think about the issue before it would be debated in the legislature.

But she should know the Iowa Senate has passed Education Savings Accounts the last two years. And there was an election in 2022. And there are more Republicans in the Iowa Senate, not less.

So if Iowans really hated Education Savings Accounts as much as she thinks, it seems strange to see more Republicans in the Senate, and not less.

During Wednesday’s Senate Education Committee meeting, Trone Garriott said she is a parent of public school children and she chose public schools.

“I am a parent and my choice matters,” she said.

Not a single soul in that room would disagree with her statement, by the way. In fact, all supporters of ESAs would like is for Trone Garriott to acknowledge that every parent’s choice matters. And every parent should be in a position to make the best choice for their own child.

“I want to make sure that the parents of the 511,000 kids PreK-12 in our state, that their choices are respected and supported as well,” she continued. “Any proposal that takes away from our public schools will hurt our kids. I don’t want our kids to get less.”

There is no doubt, none, that keeping kids in a school system that isn’t right for them hurts kids. Yet she doesn’t seem to care.

  1. Doesn’t the government do pell grants to private schools? This is exactly what children need if you actually want them to get a good education. By which I’m mean an ability to think not what to think.

  2. Think about all of the Iowans who remember the spanking and washing out their mouth with soap they would have got if they used that type of language in front of their minister.
