Today’s Iowa Senate subcommittees are highlighted by a bill that would prohibit the Department of Transportation from designing or constructing roundabouts on primary road systems. Other bills include the transportation of dead bodies, military and veterans benefits, establishing a needle exchange program and work search requirements for unemployment insurance benefits.

SSB 1007: Senate Study Bill 1007 was proposed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act relating to county attorneys and assistant county attorneys to obtain a professional permit to carry weapons.

SSB 1027: Senate Study Bill 1027 was proposed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act relating to the transportation of dead bodies.

The bill allows a sheriff, deputy sheriff, police officer, fire fighter, physician, nurse or emergency medical care provider to, while off duty, under contract with a funeral director, and using a vehicle owned by and registered to a funeral establishment, transfer a body under the same circumstances as a funeral director.

SSB 1065: Senate Study Bill 1065 is an act relating to military and veterans benefits.

Iowa Code currently has an injured veterans grant program that provides grants to vets recovering from an injury received in the line of duty in a combat zone or in a zone where the vet was receiving hazardous duty pay after Sept. 11, 2001. It eliminates the requirement that the vet be injured in a combat zone or zone where the vet is receiving hazardous duty pay in order to qualify for the program.

The bill also establishes an expedited licensing process for spouses of active duty members of the U.S. military who are stationed in Iowa pursuant to military orders.

SF 125: Senate File 125 was proposed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act relating to the establishment of a needle exchange program by the Department of Public Health.

SF 11: Senate File 11 was filed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act relating to the awarding of joint custody and joint physical care.

SSB 1087: Senate Study Bill 1087 was filed by Sen. Jake Chapman. It’s an act prohibiting roundabouts on the primary road system.

It will prohibit the Department of Transportation from designing or constructing a roundabout on the primary road system, including any road over which the DOT exercises concurrent jurisdiction.

SSB 1092: Senate Study Bill 1092 was filed by Sen. Mark Costello. It’s a resolution to the Senate Code of Ethics governing the conduct of members of the Senate in relation to their senatorial duties during the 88th General Assembly.

SSB 1093: Senate Study Bill 1093 is a concurrent resolution proposed by Sen. Mark Costello. It is relating to the joint rules governing the Senate and House of Representatives for the 88th General Assembly.

SF 99: Senate File 99 was filed by Sen. Jim Carlin. It’s an act relating to work search requirements for unemployment insurance benefits.

The bill authorizes an employer to report to the department of workforce development a job applicant who applies for a job for which the applicant does not meet the minimum lawful requirements or for which the applicant is manifestly unqualified.

SF 8: Senate File 8 was filed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act providing for the sale or lease of the Iowa Communications Network.

The bill directs the Iowa Telecommunications and Technology Commission to implement a request for proposals process to sell or lease the Iowa Communications Network, with the sale or lease to commence during the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2019.

SF 132: Senate File 132 was filed by Sen. Dan Dawson. It’s an act establishing a Lake Manawa State Park user fee pilot program.

Current law prohibits the Department of Natural Resources from imposing an entrance fee on any person entering a state park. Notwithstanding this provision, the bill allows the department to impose an entrance fee of $5 only upon nonresidents who enter Lake Manawa State Park on a per vehicle basis for one day of admission. Nonresidents may purchase an annual pass for $40.
