Wednesday’s Senate subcommittees are highlighted by a couple bills that deal with driving. One changes the penalty for failing to reduce speed or passing a school bus. Another allows peace officers or retired peace officers to provide street or highway driving instruction without being authorized by the board of educational examiners.

SF 222: Senate File 222 was filed by Sen. Liz Mathis. It’s an act relating to penalties for drivers of motor vehicles who pass, or fail to reduce speed or stop for, school buses.

This bill strikes the imprisonment for a first offense. It specifies that the DOT must require the person to attend and successfully complete, at the person’s own expense, a driver improvement program approved by the DOT in lieu of driver’s license suspension.

SF 206: Senate File 206 was filed by Sen. Jim Carlin. It’s an act requesting the establishment of a special education interim study committee.

SSB 1141: Senate Study Bill 1141 was filed by Sen. Roby Smith. It’s an act relating to restrictions on lawful preexisting nonconforming uses by cities and counties.

SF 207: Senate File 207 was filed by Sen. Charles Schneider. It’s an act relating to peace officers and retired peace officers who provide street or highway driving instruction.

Current law requires a person be certified by the DOT to provide street or highway driving instruction. This bill provides that if the person is a peace officer or retired peace officer, the person need not be authorized by the board of educational examiners.

SSB 1133: Senate Study Bill 1133 was proposed by Sen. Jason Schultz. It’s an act relating to licensing sanctions against individuals who default or are delinquent on student loan debt or on a related service obligation.

SSB 1056: Senate Study Bill 1056 was proposed by the Department of Corrections. It’s an act relating to the transfer of dangerous persons with mental illness from a hospital for persons with mental illness to the Iowa medical and classification center.

SSB 1074: Senate Study Bill 1074 was filed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act relating to the payment of required medical aid provided to prisoners of county jails.

SF 215: Senate File 215 was filed by Sen. Chris Cournoyer. It’s an act relating to the residency of members of the armed forces stationed at specified military installations for purposes of hunting, fishing and trapping privileges.

SSB 1149: Senate Study Bill 1149 was filed by Sen. Jason Schultz. It’s an act concerning unemployment insurance.

SSB 1118: Senate Study Bill 1118 was proposed by Sen. Roby Smith. It’s an act relating to canned cocktails.

SSB 1075: Senate Study Bill 1075 was filed by Sen. Brad Zaun. It’s an act prohibiting the treatment of animals other than livestock and wild animals, providing for the rescue of animals by local law enforcement agencies, providing for criminal offenses and court orders.

SSB 1095: Senate Study Bill 1095 was proposed by Sen. Jake Chapman. It’s an act relating to the removal of city utility board members.

SF 180: Senate File 180 was filed by Sen. Roby Smith. It’s an act allowing law enforcement agencies to retain possession of motor vehicles suspected to have been used to elude law enforcement vehicles.

SF 184: Senate File 184 was proposed by the Committee on Transportation. It’s an act permitting the transportation of certain types of loads by motor vehicles exceeding certain weight limitations.

SSB 1132: Senate Study Bill 1132 was filed by Sen. Jason Schultz. It’s an act requiring photo identification on electronic benefits transfer cards under the food assistance program.

SSB 1131: Senate Study Bill 1131 was filed by Sen. Jason Schultz. It’s an act relating to public assistance program oversight.
