Help Us Set the 2026 Agenda

With Thanksgiving next week, and Christmas and the New Year fast approaching, it’s time for those of us in the Iowa Legislature to gear up for the next legislative session. In a couple of weeks, the House Republican caucus will gather in Des Moines to prepare for the upcoming session and discuss policy priorities we have for the year.

Before then, we need feedback from you.  We’ve heard from a lot of Iowans during our town halls and various events throughout the year about what issues are on your mind.  We know property taxes and public safety remain a priority for many Iowans. What about you? The Fight Against Human Trafficking

Over the last few years, Iowa has taken major steps to strengthen its laws against human trafficking. House Republicans have worked to increase penalties for traffickers, expand protections for victims, and introduce new measures to help survivors rebuild their lives.

In 2023, we passed House File 630, a bill that dramatically raised the punishment for anyone convicted of human trafficking, especially when children are involved.  Then, in 2024, we built on that foundation by passing House File 2460. This measure focused on strengthening protections for survivors and improving how they are treated in the justice system. Most recently, in 2025, House File 649 refined Iowa’s legal definition of human trafficking to close loopholes and strengthen prosecutions.

I can assure you that this is an issue we are taking very seriously in the Iowa House Republican caucus. Human trafficking is one of the most heinous crimes, and our caucus has been diligent in our efforts to give law enforcement all the tools they need to eradicate these horrific stories from Iowa. We want to fight to rid instances of human trafficking from Iowa. However, when they unfortunately do take place, we must ensure that our law enforcement and justice system can hold these individuals accountable.

If you suspect human trafficking, contact the Iowa Helpline at 1-800-770-1650 or text “IOWAHELP” to 20121.
