The American Border Story (TABS) on Wednesday issued the following statement in response to the murder of a teenage girl at the hands of a previously deported illegal immigrant:

“More than 200 days after he left office, law-abiding Americans are still suffering as a result of Joe Biden’s broken border policies. Just yesterday, 16-year-old Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez and her mother were mowed down by Edwin Cruz Gomez after they rejected his sexual advances. Gomez, who was previously deported in 2005, has a long criminal history, including multiple arrests for driving under the influence. Gomez was arrested again as recently as October 2024, but the Biden Administration refused to deport him because he allegedly did not meet President Biden’s immigration enforcement priorities. Despite his record, Gomez was repeatedly released back into the community.

Jhoanny was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother, who remains in stable condition, continues to fight for her life. Gomez has since been taken into custody and is being held on an immigration detainer lodged earlier this week.

TABS commends the coordination of the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and local law enforcement for ensuring that this dangerous individual has finally been removed from the streets of New York. Because of their swift action, this criminal will finally face justice.

The Trump administration is working tirelessly to undo the damage inflicted by four years of reckless open-border policies. Our country is already safer than it was 200 days ago, but it will take more work, partnership, and coordination to continue moving in the right direction. TABS renews its call for stronger cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Dangerous criminals must be found and removed from the streets before they can harm innocent Americans. The safety of the American people must always come first.”
