Witnessing the actions of Congress the last three days have been sorely disappointing. The American people deserve better. Nancy Pelosi’s remarks were out of order, an impeachment attempt failed, and House leadership is clearly beholden to the most extreme elements of the fringe Left.

The House of Representatives therefore is not talking about passing legislation, solving problems, or addressing issues facing every day Iowans. We are in a time of unprecedented low unemployment and rapid economic growth, and we need to build on that progress by ensuring that economic opportunity reaches every Iowan.

But because of the failure of Congress, we face serious issues.

Our national debt continues to rise. Tuition is unaffordable. Families face the decision between new tires on a van or paying this month’s increasing share of healthcare costs from their paycheck because government gave them an (un)affordable care act. The crisis on the southern border continues. All the Democrats offer is name-calling, partisan attacks, proposals for more government regulation and higher spending, and renewed talk of socialism.

Worse, the Democrats in the House are willing to cede the freedoms others fought to preserve and protect with talk of a radical departure from our historic rights, values, and way of life that have made this country exceptional.

I want to go to Congress to solve problems and offer conservative, principled solutions that respect our historic rights and values. The spectacle in Washington DC right now is embarrassing. We, the people, must come together to end it, and it starts with new leadership in Congress that will work once again for the people.”
