The Iowa Standard applauds the Third Congressional District executive committee’s work on keeping score on how legislators vote compared to the Republican Party platform. That’s great work!

Last year, The Iowa Standard talked with some folks at the Capitol about creating a scorecard for Iowa legislators. But this is made complicated due to the surprisingly high number of bills that get drafted every legislative session.

While the Third Congressional District executive committee has seemingly found an effective way to rate legislators, The Iowa Standard would like to do its own version of something similar.

But we’re curious what methods our readers would encourage us to use if we decide to press forward.

We believe you can learn a lot about legislator not by their votes, but by what bills they introduce and cosponsor. It’s easy to vote the right way on an issue, but what are they willing to put their name on?

So, readers, let us know, what do you value most in your state legislators? What would be the best way to measure how well they perform their job?

No matter the methodology used, it won’t be scientific and it probably won’t be without its hiccups.

But let’s hear your thoughts.
