Bill Schafer, a candidate for Iowa’s Third Congressional District, was in attendance Wednesday night at the Second Amendment supper hosted by the Iowa Firearms Coalition and NRA. Schafer spoke with The Iowa Standard about the Second Amendment issue and how that factors into his overall campaign to defend and uphold the United States Constitution.
“It is an important issue,” he said. “It’s also impressive to see the number of folks who gather in small towns across the country to protect certain rights codified in our constitution. We really need to look closely at candidates and make sure that we are supporting and getting candidates into office in the primaries who are constitutional conservatives and will always protect the constitution and not compromise on things that are not compromisable. The Second Amendment should not be a compromisable topic.”
Schafer said he’s well aware of efforts by Democrats to pass “Red Flag” laws.
“Red flag laws and these other watered-down versions of things that don’t actually solve the problem of evil should not be supported by anybody who is elected to office in the United States,” Schafer said. “If you think about it, once you compromise on the Second Amendment with something like red flag laws, you’ve compromised due process, you’ve compromised illegal search and seizure, you’ve compromised undue fines and therefore every one of our first 10 amendments becomes a progressive target to anyone.
“Then you as an elected representative no longer have ground to stand on because you just compromised on one. If you can compromise on one, you can compromise on all 10 of our bill of rights, or, for that matter, the entire constitution.”
Schafer said it is important Americans return the House of Representatives to Republicans and President Trump to the White House.
“This election is very critical to the country,” he said. “We’re fortunate to have President Trump who has been a staunch defender of the constitution and has done a lot of great things with deregulation and protecting us as Americans. When you get to November, if we just re-elect the President and we allow the Democrats to keep the House or God forbid lose the Senate to them as well, these type of laws will just progressively get worse, the momentum will increase and eventually we’re going to lose our federal republic.”
