Longtime Iowa State Trooper and former Iowa State Representative, Jon Thorup, officially declared his candidacy today for the Iowa State Senate seat representing District 11.
With a decades-long career in public service, Thorup brings an experienced and qualified perspective to the race. He served two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives and has been a state police officer for almost 30 years. A lifelong Iowa resident, Thorup has called Warren and Marion Counties home nearly all his life and is proud to have served our community both on the patrol and in the legislature. Motivated by his personal faith and a desire to improve the state in multiple areas, Thorup is committed to respectful political discourse.
“I think a lot of us are tired of how nasty politics has become. I’m not a guy that brags very often, but I’m proud of how I have treated political opponents,” said Thorup. “Disagreement doesn’t have to include anger.”
Thorup says his work experience has shaped his concerns about public safety in Iowa. “We like to think of Iowa as a safe place, and in some ways that’s true. On the other hand, there is still a big problem in Iowa in terms of child predators and child pornography. Iowa still has hundreds of unsolved homicides,” he stated. “We need to make sure that fire and EMS services are always available for every emergency. We should be as prepared as possible in the event of a terrorist act or another school shooting.”
In his work Thorup has seen the impact that mental health has on schools and communities. He believes the earlier mental health concerns can be identified and treated, the better the outcome for the individual and community.
Thorup is driven to improve financial protections for Iowans, which includes working to help fix our state’s property tax problem and its continued impact on budgets across the state; in addition, he wants to solidify landowner protections against eminent domain. The republican candidate also cares about the health and living conditions of Iowans. He will keep pressure on water quality improvements in urban and rural areas and will advocate for answers and mitigation efforts regarding Iowa’s high incidence of cancer.
