Republican central committees in Mitchell County and Clinton County have formally censured Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Klimesh, marking another chapter in a growing grassroots protest within the state GOP against Senate leadership. The Floyd County GOP did the same on Monday night.
The censure actions come amid widespread GOP discontent over Klimesh’s decision to strip or reassign committee roles for Republican senators who supported legislation aimed at restricting the use of eminent domain for carbon pipeline projects (House File 639) and who, in some cases, endorsed primary challengers to incumbents opposing that legislation.
Some county GOP leaders argued that senators should be free to vote their conscience and reflect the views of their constituents without fear of retribution from party leadership. The resolutions call for the restoration of committee assignments and a recommitment to core conservative principles, particularly private property rights and limited government.
Mitchell and Clinton counties are not alone. Similar censures have been adopted by GOP central committees in Plymouth, O’Brien, Humboldt, Cerro Gordo and Van Buren counties, reflecting a broader tension between grassroots conservatives and the Republican legislative leadership in Des Moines.
As of publication, Klimesh’s office had not publicly responded to the recent censures from Mitchell and Clinton counties. Earlier reports indicate Klimesh has not commented directly on committee reassignments beyond routine legislative communications.
Senator Klimesh, who represents northeastern Iowa in the state Senate and serves as the chamber’s majority leader, has held his leadership post since September 2025.
