Republican Rep. Nancy Mace is proposing a resolution for the U.S. House of Representatives that prohibits males from using the female private spaces. This is in response to the election of a “transgender woman” (man) to the U.S. House from Delaware.
But a similar debate may well emerge here in Iowa where a “transgender woman” (man) called “Aime” Wichtendahl was elected to the Iowa House by voters in District 80. Wichtendahl has been a lightning rod of controversy, popping a hormone therapy pill at the end of her testimony in the Iowa State Senate and standing outside the Capitol lambasting parents who want more say in their child’s education and less political activism from educators.
I am quite certain there are at least some female legislators who aren’t comfortable with the idea of having to use a bathroom with a man in it. The question is, what will be done about it? What can be done about it?
In Iowa, it is a little more complicated since gender identity is in our state’s civil rights code and Republicans have failed to remove it since having complete control of the state government for the past eight years.
And as a reminder, when they blame Democrats for it even being in Iowa Code, remember that when it passed in 2007 it passed with 59 votes in the Iowa House. A bill needs 51 votes to pass the Iowa House. Nine Republicans voted for that bill in 2007. Do the math and you’ll realize it isn’t just because of Democrats this is in Iowa’s Civil Rights Code, but Republicans share the blame.
And last year, when a bill removing gender identity from the civil rights code was considered in subcommittee, two Republicans killed it, along with the one Democrat. And House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl told The Des Moines Register he doesn’t believe the civil rights code needs revisited. Then he said taking away such protections might be looked at as an opportunity to discriminate against those classes.
Personally, I don’t think the only thing stopping Iowans from “discriminating” against people is the Iowa Civil Rights Code.
“I would say I don’t think that that would be the wise choice or the wise thing to do for those basic civil rights protections that are there,” Windschitl said.
What Windschitl seems to be missing is the fact that the civil rights code supposedly provides protections based on sex too. But when “gender identity” is protected and men are allowed to use the women’s bathroom, protections based on sex are taken away from actual women.
The Iowa Standard has called for removing sexual orientation and gender identity from the Iowa Civil Rights Code for years. And we will continue to do so.
Perhaps now that the issue is directly impacting the legislature, the GOP-controlled House and GOP-controlled Senate will do the right thing and remove them.
I’d caution the legislature, however, from only providing such protections for themselves by launching an effort similar to Mace’s in the U.S. House. While it’s a prudent step and proper thing to do, I think all women deserve protection in all women’s spaces in Iowa — not just women’s spaces inside the Iowa Capitol.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she applauded Mace’s resolution and believes all private spaces designated for women in taxpayer-funded places should include the same protections.
So, if Iowa lawmakers are going to work to protect women’s spaces inside the Iowa Capitol, they should make sure to do the same for all women in Iowa.
So far Republican inaction on this issue has led to a bunch of issues as it relates to radical gender identity ideology across the state. And Republicans have refused to do what is necessary.
If you’re curious, for the last eight years, Republican inaction on this has kept us in the company with these states: Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Hawaii and D.C. Utah is the only other “red state” on the list. And, you know, Mitt Romney represents Utah. So perhaps its more accurate to say it “identifies” as a red state.
Is that a list of states you want to be on? Does it excite you that Iowa is in agreement with the West Coast, the entire Northeast, Tim Walz’s Minnesota and liberal Illinois? Is that why you have voted for a Republican trifecta for now nine straight years?
Now, if you care about this issue and you want girls’ bathrooms in Iowa to be closed to boys, realize who is on your side and who is not. State Rep. Jeff Shipley has done more to tackle this issue than any other legislator. I encourage you to contact him and thank him for his efforts and pledge your support to his past efforts addressing the gender ideology agenda in Iowa. I also encourage you to consider donating to his campaign ahead of the session to send a message to other legislators that there is a groundswell of Iowans who want to see girls in Iowa protected! Donate to Shipley here.
As for us, we’ll continue calling for gender identity to be removed from the civil rights code. Not because we want to discriminate against anyone, but because we don’t believe we should be compelled to go along with the lies of the gender identity ideology. We believe a 10-year-old girl has a right to shower in a locker room without a person with a penis near her. We believe a 70-year-old grandma has a right to use a restroom without encountering a male.
Last week, Google flagged our story about Will “Lia” Thomas as containing “dangerous or derogatory” content. We’re hoping to get a response from Google about what specifically in our piece was dangerous or derogatory.
We’re not going to accept and adopt the lies of the Left as it relates to sex and gender. That isn’t happening. It isn’t our article that’s “dangerous or derogatory.” It’s the truth. The truth that men cannot become women and women cannot become men and that a trans woman is actually a man and a trans man is actually a woman.
It isn’t dangerous. It isn’t derogatory. It’s truth.
