On its face Senate File 376 is a bill that seemingly has well intentions. But the opposition from many of The Iowa Standard’s readers has been overwhelming.

The bill, which puts in place education requirements dealing with mental health awareness, coping and suicide prevention has drawn sharp criticism from many of you.

Planned Parenthood said at the subcommittee hearing it would be happy to help with potential curriculum for these standards. Republicans won’t allow that, but Republicans won’t always be in control either.

We want to share some of those responses:

“Since they (Planned Parenthood) confuse so many about their gender identity resulting in a 40 percent suicide rate, I doubt they would be very helpful in teaching anything about mental health. Seems more like that is letting an ax murderer teach children how to best kill their undesirables.”

“Only cradle-to-grave statists could think this (is) the proper role of government.”

“Suicide is the fruit of hopelessness. Kids are hopeless because they’re being taught God-less, depressing, disgusting socialism instead of the hope of the Gospel and the wisdom and truth of the Bible. Get the state out of education and start giving the kids what they really need, spiritually, morally, intellectually and physically.”

“More government mandated indoctrination.”

“More time taken from teaching the three Rs.”

“In my opinion this is not a good bill. There are unintended consequences of giving more power to the educational establishment. This is another way Planned Parenthood with their anti-life agenda to have more influence on the teaching of children in public schools.”

“Suicide related issues should not be taught in schools at all. It will cause an increase in teen suicides.”

“How about teaching civics and logic? They should also teach everyday skills like using a bank account, filling out job applications.”

“A teacher is not a doctor. They do not have the schooling on mental illness. They can teach awareness but they too many times try to tell parents to put their kids on drugs. If they are going to teach awareness, coping and prevention then they should have to take courses from a certified doctor.”
