Thursday, it was reported that the US Department of Education has found Connecticut’s school athletics policy allowing biological males to compete in girl’s sports in violation of Title IX. In a letter sent earlier this month, the Department’s Office of Civil Rights declared that the state’s policy has “denied female student-athletes athletic benefits and opportunities” by forcing them to participate against male athletes, and it threatened a suspension of federal funding if actions were not taken to correct the policy.

In response, Terry Schilling, executive director of American Principles Project, released the following statement praising the Department’s action:

Women’s sports in America are under severe threat. This is blatantly obvious to anyone paying attention to the growing examples of biological males dominating in various women’s competitions. That, in the year 2020, three high school girl athletes in Connecticut are being forced to sue the state in order to maintain their right to an equal playing field is outrageous. And yet this is exactly what Democrats and their progressive allies would like to see happen across the country.

Thankfully, women athletes have their own strong allies in the Trump administration. President Trump and Secretary Betsy DeVos have shown through their leadership that they are staunch defenders of the right to a fair competition which Title IX provides to female student-athletes. APP commends them for taking this important step to protect women’s sports, and we encourage other conservative leaders in Congress and the states to follow their example.

American Principles Project has been a leader in recent efforts to highlight attacks on biological reality in school sports, most notably running a high-profile digital ad campaign on the issue during the 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial race. APP plans to duplicate this campaign in the 2020 presidential election.
