An English teacher at Dowling Catholic had to take his LGBTQ pride flag down this year due to the school’s administration implementing a “Catholic lens” on campus.

A reader told The Iowa Standard that Mr. Michael McGuire has had a pride flag hanging in his room for quite some time, but with the implementation of the Catholic lens this year he was forced to take it down.

Some students were upset at the decision and have started a petition to show support for the teacher flying the flag that defies church and basic biblical teachings.

“This year, Dowling Catholic has decided to enforce a ‘Catholic lens.’ Because of this, they have forced a teacher to take down the pride flag he has had in his classroom,” the petition states. “This flag offers a safe space for LGBTQ youth at Dowling. It promotes positive change and spreads a message of love and acceptance – something Jesus promoted. Please sign this petition to show your support in keeping the flag up.”
