The Van Buren County Republican Central Committee said it is “proud” to stand alongside fellow Republicans on the Mahaska County Central Committee and Pocahontas Central Committee in censuring Sen. Joni Ernst.

Van Buren voted to send a formal letter of censure to Sen. Ernst. And, they said county central committees are not specifically prohibited from expressing their disapproval of a Republican elected official who has violated the principles of the party as expressed in the platform.

“Indeed, holding elected officials accountable for their misdeeds is a watchdog function the county central committees and district executive committees must perform.”

The letter, which will be sent from the Van Buren Republicans to Sen. Ernst, called the (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act a “deplorable bill” that will “guarantee endless legal attacks and cause innumerable problems for the people of Van Buren County, the state of Iowa and our nation as a whole.”

“You have run for election and re-election as a Republican in our state. As such, you agree to the principles set forth in the platforms of the Van Buren County Republican Party and the Republican Party of Iowa, and to represent those principles and the values of your constituents in the Senate of the United States,” the letter said.

It then referred to Article 7 of the Van Buren County GOP platform, which states:

“We support the enactment of a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as being between one natural man and one natural woman. We believe that the traditional family (one man, one woman, and their children) is the building block to a moral, healthy and thriving society.” (7.1); and “We believe the citizens of Iowa have the right to vote on a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.”

It also quoted the Iowa Republican Party platform from the section on legislative priorities, paragraph Liberty, clause 13:

“We believe that traditional, two-parent (one male(XY) and one female(XX) ) marriage-based families are the foundation to a stable, enduring and healthy civilization. We encourage the repeal of any laws allowing any marriage that is not between one natural
man and one natural woman.”

Ernst’s votes in favor of HR 8404 show a “blatant disregard for the values set forth in these Republican platforms that you ran on, and utter contempt for the will of Republican voters in Iowa who elected you to office,” the letter said.

“Therefore, we the members of the Van Buren County Republican Central Committee condemn your action and formally censure you for your votes on HR 8404 in the United States Senate.”

Ernst was censured by central committees in Mahaska and Pocahontas counties previously. Efforts are underway in many other counties.

  1. Well, good for them! This needs to be done more often. It should be done for her vote to send money to a corrupt country like Ukraine! For her vote her vote for unconstitutional, red flagged, gun laws proves that she cares nothing for the constitution! I am many people don’t know this, but she actually tried to start a bill that would give free diapers and make it all right for everyone to have free divers. She is an abomination!!! I don’t understand why her coworkers don’t shame her and Charles Grassley alike!!! if her fellow supposed conservative coworkers, instead of embracing her and campaigning for her, would shame her a lot of this BS would stop!!!
