Convention of States is thrilled to announce a brand new endorser!

Bob Vander Plaats is the president and CEO of The Family Leader, a social organization advocating for “righteous, God-honoring public policy” in Iowa. He has been involved in state politics for several decades and is a popular speaker and author.

Now, he’s thrown his considerable influence behind the Convention of States effort.

“I believe the time has come for the states to use their power under Article V of the Constitution to put the brakes on our runaway federal government,” stated Vander Plaats. “It is obvious that Washington has no intention of reining in its profligate spending, trampling of our freedoms, stranglehold on public education, or dictating its woke agenda on our families and businesses. For years I have joined Iowans in trying to use our influence in national politics to turn things around, but $32 trillion of debt alone proves that elections are not going to fix this problem.”

“I am convinced,” he continued, “that the limits placed in the Constitution to curb the power of the federal government have been wiped away by the courts and Congress. It’s now up to the state legislature to do their duty and restore the federalism that has been the key to the success of our country.”

Vander Plaats acknowledged that some may be hesitant to use Article V, but explained that, after doing his research, he is persuaded that the process is safe and effective.

“For some time now, I have reserved judgment on the wisdom of holding an Article V convention of the states to propose amendments. I am well aware of the arguments by conservatives like Tamara Scott and Eagle Forum, as well as the John Birch Society, that have raised doubts, and I have taken them to heart. But after studying the issue and conversing with scholars and practitioners I trust, I’ve determined that the arguments against using the Article V convention process are based on irrational fears. I believe we can trust the constitutional process the Founding Fathers left to the states to call a convention of states to propose amendments and require each proposed amendment to be ratified by 38 of the 50 state legislatures. As we have seen with the previous 27 amendments, only proposed amendments that have extremely broad public support have any chance for ratification,” he pointed out.

“I hope that Iowa legislators will get behind this effort and pass the resolution applying for a convention of the states to propose amendments that impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and set term limits on federal officials,” he concluded.

Convention of States is hard at work to pass our resolution in Iowa, and we are honored to be locking shields with Vander Plaats. His tremendous influence in the state will be a huge asset.
