UPDATE:

Waukee Schools executive director of communications Amy Varcoe said the protest planned for Wednesday, March 23 will not longer be at the stadium.

“We have advised the students to use the public park adjacent to the stadium if they want to peacefully assemble,” she said. “The students put this together, which is within their right. Needless to say, they did not run their walkout information/flyer by our staff to ask to use the stadium or promote on social media, hence why all the discrepancies.”

The Waukee High School GSA Twitter page had previously said that Waukee High School is hosting a “school-wide walkout” to protest the bill protecting women’s sports.

The post falsely states that the new law prohibits transgender women from participating in high school or college sports when, in reality, it simply states a person must compete in a sport that aligns with their biological sex listed on their birth certificate.

While the flyer suggests the school is behind the event, Varcoe said that is not true and the event is instead student-led.

Varcoe said the bottom line is students are expected to be in class tomorrow.
