Earlier this week we published a story about the Fourth Congressional District race. In it, we made it clear that we were not going to endorse any of the five candidates, but we wrote the following:

The Iowa Standard is NOT endorsing anyone. Congressman King, Jeremy Taylor and Bret Richards all have individual strengths. King and Taylor have stood up to leadership within the Party. Richards has worked exceptionally hard. He is an Average Joe, everyday-Iowan that relates as a real “neighbor.”

The article itself was about the NeverTrump, GOP establishment support Sen. Randy Feenstra has collected. We included the paragraph about King, Taylor and Richards at the end.
There is a fifth candidate, though, Steve Reeder. And we knew that, of course. We’re pretty cognizant of who is running in what races. However, we simply do not know enough about Reeder to render a verdict.
We have talked with Reeder once, when we discussed the life issue. We’ve never talked in person, though. The jury is definitely still out, especially since he has no legislative record to base any opinions on.
At the same time, The Iowa Standard will always have a special place in our hearts for the “underdog.” Who doesn’t? Come on.
Few things are more frustrating than watching someone who is working hard and busting their tail not receive the same opportunity and attention from the media.
It is wrong.
In our estimation, it was more kind to Reeder to simply leave him out of the mix rather than say we simply don’t know enough about him to make a decision.
Like every other campaign (Republican and Democrat alike), Reeder is and was invited to submit anything he likes for publication.
While his campaign has put materials out for public consumption, nothing can replace the value of someone’s gut instinct when they meet face-to-face or have multiple conversations that truly dig deep.
So, yes, readers — Steve Reeder is running for Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District.
And yes, we stand by our assessment as well.
And as an addendum, Reeder is also running. But we don’t know near enough about him to say he’d make an acceptable congressman or whether there is cause for concern.
