The Supreme Court heard arguments in the momentous Dobbs abortion case this week.  Some are hoping for a quick decision, but I’m betting the Court won’t announce its ruling whether to overturn Roe v. Wade until June.  The Court usually waits until the end of the term to announce its most important decisions.  I don’t know what the Court will do, but what is clear to me is that the Left is losing this argument and deservedly so.

The Left ginned up an entire phony P.R. campaign to get the decision it wanted 50 years ago in Roe v. Wade.  The campaign was based on deception – they just made stuff up – and was later repudiated by its architect, Dr. Bernard Nathanson.  Nathanson performed 75,000 abortions himself, but later renounced what he had done and, in his dying days, asked people to publicize the fact he had changed his mind.

That P.R. campaign started with framing the argument in terms of ‘choice’, even though Nathanson knew he was trying to legalize murder.  A P.R. firm helped Nathanson create slogans on the pro-choice theme, slogans you still hear today like ‘My Body, My Choice’ and, ‘a fetus is just a lump of cells.’  Abortion advocates enlisted the aid of complicit media outlets to spread the pro-choice message.

And yes, they made stuff up and fed it to the idiot press – “We aroused enough sympathy to sell our program of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S. The actual figure was approaching 100,000 but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1,000,000. Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public. The number of women dying from illegal abortions was around 200–250 annually. The figure we constantly fed to the media was 10,000.”

The lies didn’t stop there.  Nathanson told the media 60 percent of Americans wanted abortion to be legal.  The true figure was one-half of one percent.

In the almost 50 years since, the pro-life movement has steadily gained ground by being endlessly inventive and not giving up, while the pro-abortion crowd has made mistake after mistake and never convinced the grassroots that abortion-on-demand is a good idea.  An abortion activist recently admitted in the New York Times that principally relying on the courts instead of changing people’s minds about abortion was a mistake.  What the courts giveth, the courts can take away, which the Supreme Court may very well do this term.

The pro-choice campaign was born of deceit, but the awful truths of abortion can no longer be denied – the steady stream of botched abortions, the large number of women injured or killed by abortion pills, the lasting damage to women’s health, the infertility, the depression and regret, the continuing lies and deceit (more here and here) – there’s not a whole lot to like here.  The sooner the Left’s phony narrative on abortion bites the dust, the better.  Abortion needs to stop but, for the moment, the Supreme Court needs to send the entire abortion issue back to the states, where it belongs.
