State Rep. John Wills (R-Dickinson) said he anticipates the abortion neutrality amendment requiring quite the lift in order to get through the Iowa House.
“I think life issues are going to be a tougher row to hoe because we’ve got some people in our caucus that maybe aren’t as strong towards that direction,” he said. “I think there’s still some things that we can do.”
Entering session, the abortion neutrality amendment seems to be the top priority for pro-life legislators.
“I just don’t know if we’ve got the ability to do that this year,” Wills said. “I’d like to say we do, but I’m just being realistic in my assumptions.”
Should the life amendment pass two general assemblies, as is required by law, there’s a chance it would share the ballot in 2022 with a gun rights amendment.
“I don’t get it,” Wills said of the hesitation to support the abortion neutrality amendment. “I don’t know why we wouldn’t let the public decide. Let’s let the people of Iowa make the decision. I don’t know why it’s such a hard vote, but maybe we can get there. At this stage, I just don’t see it. But a lot of things have happened where I didn’t see it possible before. I’d be happy if it happened.”
