Republican Rep. Sandy Salmon continued to lead the Iowa House when it comes to standing up for sanity on Thursday.
Salmon delivered remarks on her Fairness in Women’s Sports amendment. While she ultimately withdrew the amendment, bringing the conversation to the floor of the Iowa House should have brought attention to the fact that Iowa House Republicans have largely failed to address the most consequential issue of our time — the attack on the traditional family from the LGBTQ freight train receiving little resistance from the Iowa legislature.
Salmon said that fairness and equality are now being threatened to be turned into “unfairness and inequality.”
“I’m speaking of maintaining girls and women’s sports as we have always known them,” she said. “This amendment prohibits biological men and boys from participating in women’s and girls sports.”
Female competitors in other states have lost sports titles and scholarship opportunities due to biological males competing against them, she added.
“It is common knowledge that biological males due to their physical makeup are typically bigger, stronger and faster than biological females in physical activities such as sports,” Salmon said. “To pretend otherwise is naive, living in unreality and is denying what is obvious and basic to humanity.”
Salmon pointed to the Boys vs. Women website.
“It illustrates that the best high school boys track competitors can beat the Olympic women’s track finalists,” Salmon said. “A boy may believe he is a girl, but that doesn’t cancel out his physical advantages. It’s entirely unfair for girls to have to compete against biological boys in sports.”
Salmon went on to note that boys and girls are different, but equal. However, she said, they are not interchangeable.
“All the opportunities for girls were created because we recognized the physical differences between girls and boys,” she said. “Allowing biological males to compete in girls sports defeats the purpose for which girls sports were created, which was to create a level playing field for girls.”
Salmon called on the legislature to step up and protect fairness and equal privileges afforded to girls and women for decades.
