The Iowa Senate Education Committee passed House File 802 on Tuesday on a party line vote. Democrat Sen. Claire Celsi was one of a few members of her party in committee to speak against the legislation.
The bill prohibits the teaching of 10 divisive concepts as fact in diversity trainings for government entities as well as K-12 curriculum.
Not a single Democrat could bring themself to vote for a bill that would ban teaching as fact the idea that one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex, the U.S. and Iowa are fundamentally or systemically racist or sexist, an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously…the list goes on.
Not only did every Democrat on the Education Committee vote against the legislation, Celsi called the bill “the dumbest bill I have ever read.”
Celsi, if you’re wondering, cosponsored Senate File 207 this year. That bill provides for the establishment of a task force regarding climate adaptability and resiliency.
In 2019 she cosponsored Senate File 175, a bill to create the “Iowa End-of-Life Options Act.”
She also sponsored Senate File 498, which provided for the installation of solar energy systems in state buildings.
But Celsie called House File 802 the dumbest bill she’s ever read.
