Congresswoman Ashley Hinson released the following statement on Abbott’s plan to restart baby formula production at their Sturgis, Michigan, facility. Abbott anticipates their products will be back on shelves six to eight weeks after production is restarted.

“The Biden Administration ignored multiple warning signs that a baby formula shortage was imminent, sitting on their hands until shelves were bare in Iowa and across the country. While I’m glad there is an agreement in place to restart production at the Abbott plant, families cannot continue to live like this. Abbott and the FDA must work as quickly as possible to safely restock baby formula at sufficient levels. In the meantime, we will continue working to get more baby formula on the shelves and ensure families are never in this position again.”-Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Last week, Hinson sent a letter to the FDA calling for a timeline to get formula back on the shelves as well as demanding the FDA provide a plan to prevent future shortages.

Abbott is releasing certain, medically necessary metabolic formulas that were previously on hold. Those with a baby who needs metabolic formula are encouraged to call Abbott at 1-800-881-0876 for assistance.
