To keep the Iowa Legislature focused, bills have to show they have enough support to move forward. This is called “The Funnel” and this is the first-week funneling bills out of consideration. I was proud to ensure certain priorities for Iowans made the necessary progress to continue moving. I have highlighted a few of those bills I worked on personally below. Protecting Iowa Investments from ESG
Senate Study Bill 1094, prohibiting Iowa’s public funds from investing in companies that boycott fossil-fuel based energy, timber, mining, production agriculture, or anything relating to firearms. This bill is a result of concerns about ESG (environmental, social and governance) investment practices and the idea that investment firms are putting their own political agendas over Iowans’ returns. Returns for retirees will always come before out-of-state political agendas.
Keeping Iowans’ Private Information Private
Senate Study Bill 1200 also passed through committee this week. This bill protects citizens’ private, personal information from inspection by the state auditor. It would include medical records, academic records, or any similar information an individual would reasonably expect to be kept private. The goal for this legislation is to ensure some of the most private information of Iowans is protected and to give Iowans confidence in knowing the information they believe is confidential is, in fact, confidential and private. This bill is common-sense legislation to protect Iowans’ information that is unnecessary for an internal state audit.
