Representative Megan Jones introduced House File 78. The bill prohibits a state agency, state official or state employee from placing a photo, video or audio recording device on private property without obtaining a search warrant or express permission from an owner of the property.
Jones said there was a state employee who helped themselves onto the property of another person and did not appear to have any business there. The person later put a camera on the property, allegedly.
“That’s really what we are trying to get at here,” Jones said.
The ACLU, Americans For Prosperity and Iowa Association for Justice are all supportive of the bill.
There were no public comments submitted on the bill.
The bill was signed through the subcommittee, though amendments are recommended.
