On Tuesday November 30, the US House passed HR 550 in committee and on the floor that would expand the state public health departments collection of individuals’ private vaccination records. The bill would also allow the Federal government to receive this information potentially enabling them to “track” unvaccinated Americans, according to Rep. Mary Miller from Illinois. “The government cannot be trusted to be transparent. The government has become so large you cannot expect them to keep anything private anymore. There is hardly any congressional oversight into studies these agencies conduct”, Rep. Miller added.
We are very disappointed that Rep. Cindy Axne, Rep. Marianette Miller-Meeks, and Rep. Ashely Hinson all voted yea on the bill. Please remind them that we have a right to privacy especially from the Federal Government! In last year’s general session Division 6 of SF193, a bill we lobbied for, would have dealt with this issue at the state level by ensuring IRIS would be opt-in only. Requiring healthcare providers to obtain the patients’ consent prior to registering their vaccinations into the state-run registry. Unfortunately, that part of the bill did not go forward and on top of that Rep. Ann Meyer, who chairs the Human Resources Committee, put amendments REQUIRING mandatory reporting of all vaccines into the registry on multiple bills to ensure this quest for tracking vaccination status was accomplished. While the Iowa legislature did remove the public access to this registry it needs to deal with this tracking issue completely by obtaining consent from Iowans first before registering this data.
