Democrat Stacey Abrams offered an explanation for why 107 county sheriffs have endorsed Republican Gov. Brian Kemp against her in this election. And her explanation probably shouldn’t have been said outloud.
“As I pointed out before, I’m not a member of The Good Old Boys Club,” Abrams said. “So no, I don’t have 107 sheriffs who want to be able to take black people off the streets, who want to be able to go without accountability.”
Georgia has 159 county sheriffs, meaning Kemp enjoys the support of more than two-thirds of the state’s sheriffs. Abrams tried to cite her 11 years working with the Sheriff’s Association during her time in state government earlier in the debate.
Does Abrams believe, after working with the Sheriff’s Association for 11 years, that the sheriffs want to “be able to take black people off the streets” and go “without accountability?”
She attempted to retreat.
“I don’t believe every sheriff wants that, but I do know that we need a governor who believes in both defending law enforcement, but also defending the people of Georgia,” she said.
