U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a veteran of the Global War on Terrorism and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, led her colleagues in urging the Biden Administration to designate the Taliban as a terrorist organization.

Fox News covered Ernst’s efforts, writing: “Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, on Wednesday led a group of senators in sending a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken asking him to designate the Taliban as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).”

In an interview this morning on Newsmax, Ernst discussed her push for the administration to take action while underscoring the Taliban’s continuation of their murderous and oppressive habits after reclaiming control of Afghanistan.

In a letter dated Wednesday to Secretary of State Antony Blinken led by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), several senators said the ‘current version of the Taliban government presents a significant threat to the United States,’ reported The Hill.

As reported by the Daily Caller, Ernst and her colleagues wrote:We are also concerned that the Taliban now controls significant quantities of advanced military equipment intended for use by the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces,’ the letter continues. ‘That captured military equipment has significantly expanded the Taliban’s military power and provided them with the capability and capacity to cause great harm to their intended targets.’

Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee, led by Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa, raised concerns over the Taliban’s murderous history and the recent appointment of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the leader of the terrorist Haqqani Network, as its interior minister,” wrote the Washington Times.

Townhall also reported on Ernst’s letter: “While it’s something of a surprise that Taliban terrorists are not yet officially considered terrorists in the eyes of the United States government, Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) and some of her Republican colleagues want to change that.”
