Name: Heath Hansen, Republican
Office/District: State Senate District 6
Hometown: Audubon
Profession: Pastor, Counselor
Why running for office: “Because I care about the future of Iowa and I want to make sure that Iowa is a good place for my kid to grow up and for her to raise her own family. Iowa has always been good to me. I grew up here, I love the state and I want to continue to see it do great things and continue to be a great place to live. I worry that Iowa could easily go the other direction like some other states, like Virginia is doing where they start restricting peoples’ rights. I want to make sure that I have an active role in guarding the rights of Iowans.
“I care about the issues the state is facing. I’m pro-life, pro-gun and I’m pro-Iowa. I’m pro-life because I believe all children deserve a chance to live their life. I believe in life at conception until natural death. The gun culture we have in Iowa is a gift from God — it is a great thing for us to have. I am pro-rural Iowa because I think rural Iowa provides opportunities to make better citizens and allow our kids to grow up in a place where they can feel safe, loved and can grow up with the values to love their country.
“I feel called to run for this office. I don’t know why anyone would run for this kind of office who didn’t feel called to do it. It’s a lot of stress, it’s a lot of work and it’s supposed to be the job of a servant. So, I think you have to be called to this — called to serve the state and serve your neighbors. I’ve put a lot of thought and prayer into this and this is where I was led.”
