The outcry resulting from the conservative commencement speech by Harrison Butker isn’t surprising. The Benedictine nuns complain “instead of promoting unity, he’s created division.” How so? Even the Pope has stated that a “Conservative is one who clings to something and does not want to see beyond that. It is a suicidal attitude.”

I beg to differ. Yes, women have contributed immeasurably to business, education, science, government and much more. However, it has come with a price to the traditional conservative family structure and the heart and soul of our nation.

Daycare can never replace the guidance that mom can provide in the home environment. A sack of fast food picked up after a hard day at work can’t compare with a home-cooked meal made with love and care.

Those of us who were raised in a conservative family with our mom at home, and were able to raise our own children that way have reaped the benefits. That’s not to say that women shouldn’t be in the workforce. In many, if not most cases it would be financially impossible to exist without a second income.

However, given the opportunity, a two-parent household with either mom or dad as a full-time parent will always be a superior choice.

I praise Butker for his courage. He didn’t condemn women who choose to work. He praised his wife for her ability to determine her personal role in the life of their family. What is the damage in that?
