Monday, Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed HB 500, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which prohibits biological males from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams at public schools, colleges and universities in the state. The bill’s signing comes as the issue has exploded across the country in recent months, with the Department of Justice last week signaling its opposition to allowing “gender identity” to trump biological sex in school athletics.
American Principles Project (APP) has been a leader in recent efforts to highlight attacks on biological reality in school sports, most notably running a high-profile digital ad campaign on the issue during the 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial race. APP plans to duplicate this campaign in the 2020 presidential election.
In response to the Idaho bill’s signing, APP executive director Terry Schilling released the following statement praising Gov. Little and state lawmakers:
Women’s sports in America are under severe threat. This is blatantly obvious to anyone paying attention to the growing examples of biological males dominating in various women’s competitions. Nevertheless, even as high school girl athletes are now being forced to take legal action to preserve their right to a level playing field, progressive elites continue to argue that this problem is a fabrication or that the real issue is a lack of acceptance of “gender identity.”
Fortunately, there are still some leaders courageous enough to stand up for fairness and equal opportunity amidst the left’s cultural onslaught. Gov. Brad Little and Idaho lawmakers showed yesterday through their actions that they are true champions in the cause of protecting women’s sports. APP commends them for their leadership on behalf of women athletes, and we encourage leaders in other states to follow their example.
