Senate File 460 advanced through the House Judiciary Committee on Monday. The bill prohibits a parent or guardian of a child from disseminating and exhibiting obscene material to their own child if the parent is a sex offender.
Rep. Bobby Kaufmann (R-Wilton), who managed the bill through committee, said the bill as it passed the Senate was “way too broad” and would’ve gone so far as to make anyone who brought their child into the Capitol a criminal since there are naked statues.
The House would amend the bill so that it only applies to parents who are also sex offenders. Kaufmann said there have been instances where convicted sex offenders show their own child pornography.
“We have concerns about creeps, sex offenders, showing their children explicit pornography,” Kaufmann said. “You give up that right, in my opinion, the second that you become a sex offender. You don’t get to show your children sexually explicit pornography.”
The amendment, Kaufmann said, actually returns the bill to the way it was originally drafted. But, he said even if the House changes it, the Senate could make other changes.
