On Sunday we told you about a 16-year-old male at the Iowa Boys State Training School who was given four vaccines according to the boy’s mother despite having a religious exemption and the mother never signing anything providing permission for the school to provide medical treatment to her son.

You can read that story here.

The Iowa Department of Human Services provided The Iowa Standard with this statement on Monday:

”Due to confidentiality provisions in the law, the Department of Human Services (DHS) is unable to comment on specific cases or clients.

We can say, DHS works with parents and guardians during the intake process at the Boys State Training School to obtain consent for treatment, including routine and emergent medical care, and the administration of medications and the standard course of vaccines. Many students come in to DHS’ care absent recent medical care.

Acknowledging that parental consent is critical to this process, the agency provides an exemption option for parents or guardians who do not wish to provide consent. DHS recently added a separate consent process for COVID-19 vaccination.

DHS regularly reviews its client intake and consent procedures to ensure parent or guardian consent options are clearly laid out and understood by all parties. We also invite feedback from all parents to ensure the intake process is clear and understood to all parties.”

We asked if DHS could confirm or deny the mother’s account. Alex Carfrae said it could not comment on specific cases or clients due to confidentiality provisions in the law.
