Did you know that one of the oldest National Cemeteries—older than Arlington National Cemetery—is located in Southeast Iowa?
The Keokuk National Cemetery is one of 12 original national cemeteries designated by Congress. It honors men and women who served
with honor in the U.S. Armed Forces throughout our nation’s history.
Keokuk got its start during the Civil War, when thousands of sick and wounded soldiers were transported up the Mississippi River from the Southern battlefields.
In Keokuk, they received care in five union hospitals. Those who did not survive were the first to be buried there.
Today, honorably discharged members of the armed forces and their immediate family can be laid to rest without charge at the Cemetery—a beautiful spot to remember those who gave their all in service to our country.
The Cemetery will host a Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 AM Monday, November 11. The Keokuk National Cemetery is located on the west side of Keokuk at 1701 J Street.
