Good morning! Welcome to September!
If you are a loyal Facebook follower, you know already about the family in Madison County that was told they could no longer access services other than emergency room services by the clinic at Madison County Memorial Hospital due to their child’s vaccination status.
You also know in at least a handful of schools across Iowa, students were welcomed back with pride flags displayed on the wall.
We’re dealing with these issues because we’ve put them off for far too long.
“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.”
Here is what I mean by that… I have seen comments and heard from people regarding the hospital/clinic/vaccination thing saying they aren’t surprised because it happened to them or it happened to a friend.
It is time for us (conservatives) to start standing up for ourselves and speaking out. We’re fighting the fights because we haven’t fought them yet. We haven’t wanted to be the one. We haven’t wanted to risk creating conflict in the community or the church or the family or the school.
But here’s the deal, remaining silent about these wrongs only allowing the wrongs to happen to the next person. And then the next. Because it isn’t going to just stop.
Discrimination will not just stop with you. Indoctrination will not just stop with your child. They will continue doing what they’re allowed to get away with.
At some point we have to tackle these problems. And that doesn’t happen by staying silent about them. To be fair, conservatives have very few places — if any (other than The Iowa Standard of course) — where they can go and tell these stories and get a fair shake. The media isn’t typically on our side. The education system isn’t typically on our side. Pop culture isn’t typically on our side.
We don’t have much going for us — unless you count the truth.
And that counts for something.
The reality is silence can indeed be consent. But we don’t have to be silent.
Rather than fear being less popular or fear retribution or fear losing our job or fear whatever it is we fear, we need to muster the courage to speak up for what is right. And when wrong is happening, we need to make sure others know. And if that costs us something in the short-term, we should know it will be worth it long term.
Nothing quite kills action like inaction. People need to know what the problem is and that it is happening before they’ll do something about it.
And keeping it secret isn’t going to clue them in.
If you have an issue that needs attention, let us know! Email me at [email protected].
We’re here because we let ourselves get here. That’s the sad reality we are in. But we don’t have to stay here. We can start calling this stuff out. We can organize. We can come together. We can demand better.
But we have to stop waiting and hoping for someone else to lead the charge. We have to be willing to do it ourselves. I promise you’ll be surprised how many people will follow.
