Judge Peter A. Cahill, who is presiding over the Derek Chauvin trial, rejected a request to declare a mistrial after Congresswoman Maxine Waters encouraged protesters to “get more confrontational” if the verdict of the case is not guilty, guilty, guilty.
Though the judge rejected the mistrial request, he did criticize Waters and even said this:
“I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” Cahill said.
Cahill added that he wishes elected officials would stop talking about the case — “especially in a manner that is disrespectful to the rule of law and to the judicial branch and our function.”
“If they want to give their opinions they should do so…in a manner that is consistent with their oath to the Constitution,” Cahill added.
