Kim Laube spoke in defense of the resolution. Laube is the director of life ministries at Lutheran Family Services.

“This amendment became necessary when a handful of unelected members of the Iowa Supreme Court overstepped the constitutionally outlined mandate and chose in essence to create law rather than to interpret it,” Laube said. “In a 5-2 ruling last June on the 72-hour waiting period, the court found a fundamental right to abortion where one did not exist.

“This inappropriate ruling by judicial activists intentionally tied the legislature’s hands, rendering it virtually impossible in the absence of a constitutional amendment to legislatively impose any reasonable restriction on abortion.”

Laube said the court’s ruling opened the door to late-term abortion in Iowa.
