Today, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a national political forecasting newsletter, released a ranking of the 2022 races for Attorney General. Of the 30 contests around the country, Iowa was listed first among Democratic-held, competitive seats. The forecast is a clear indication of the competitiveness of the race following the entry of Guthrie County Attorney Brenna Bird.

“National observers are recognizing what we in Iowa already know,” said Brenna Bird. “Tom Miller’s days as Attorney General are numbered. Iowans are ready for an attorney general who will fight for their constitutional rights, stand up for law enforcement, and oppose the Biden administration’s authoritarianism.”

The Crystal Ball’s Iowa analysis is below and the full story is available here.

Tom Miller is the nation’s longest-tenured state AG, first winning election in 1978 and serving all but 4 years since. Miller, who’s 77, has survived difficult political environments in the past, but Iowa’s recent swing to the right could pose a stiff challenge.

Miller faces a rematch with Brenna Bird, a former aide to former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) who lost a challenge to Miller in 2010. Bird has goaded Miller with aggressive rhetoric, potentially forcing the longtime incumbent to up his campaign game. Bird may be aided by the fact that the state’s top two Republicans, Sen. Chuck Grassley and Gov. Kim Reynolds, are also on the ballot this year.

  1. Welcome Brenna Bird. Honestly, I don’t know your platform yet, but we need a challenger to step up and fight for our conservative values and interests. Miller has continually looked the other way on the issues that need to be challenged, issues the White House usses to transgress our State rights. I and conservatives look forward to hearing more from you.
