According to reports, about 40 percent of New York City inspected businesses are noncompliant with the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

There are about 31,000 businesses required to ask employees and customers for proof of vaccination. The city inspected two-thirds of them. About 8,000 were issued a warning for being noncompliant.

While fines are possible for the first violation, the city has been giving warnings first.

Customers who want to use an establishment for more than 10 minutes must show vaccination cards and a matching ID or digital vaccine passport. Businesses also have to display a sign announcing the mandate and a written plan for implementing the mandate.

More than three-fourths of targeted restaurants reported worse business as a result of the mandate. Nearly 58 reported business being “much worse,” according to a survey by the New York State Restaurant.
