For the first time in state history, there are more than 2 million active voters in Iowa heading into a general election year. Secretary of State Paul Pate announces that 2,014,226 Iowans are registered to vote in the state. That is the most ever at the start of December prior to a general election.

“Iowa is one of the top states in the nation for voter registration and we have made it easier than ever to register to vote,” Secretary Pate said. “We instituted online voter registration, made same-day registration easier, and help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault register to vote while keeping their address confidential through the Safe at Home program. The new law allowing 17-year-olds to register to vote and our push to get high schools involved is also making a big impact.”

The all-time high for active registered voters in Iowa was 2,045,864, set in January 2017.

“My office will continue to encourage every eligible Iowan to register to vote and participate in elections. I’m confident we will continue to break new records in the next 14 months,” Secretary Pate added.

Iowa is one of only seven states that offers online voter registration, same day voter registration, early voting and no-fault absentee voting.

The current statewide active voter registration totals breakdown is as follows:

Democratic: 613,899
Republican: 640,180
No Party: 743,885
Other: 16,262

TOTAL: 2,014,226
