Hundreds of citizens turned out Tuesday night for the Ankeny School Board meeting. But one newsworthy item took place right at the beginning of the meeting.

The Des Moines Register sent reporter Melody Mercado to cover the meeting. Mercado is one of the Register reporters who has been working hard to disparage Tom Conley in an effort to damage his business after Conley wrote a letter to the editor of the Register defending law enforcement and exposing the clear conflict of interest in having Andrea Sahouri write anti-police pieces while facing charges.

Conley has been criticized for his criticisms of a group of white protesters who were paid by Black Lives Matter allegedly to create chaos in Des Moines. He also shared a number of conservative memes and messages with Des Moines officials.

While Conley is being criticized partially for being an unashamed, patriotic American, it appears Mercado can’t be troubled to face the flag — let alone stand for it — during the Pledge of Allegiance.

The irony of a reporter, who enjoys the liberties provided by the First Amendment, refusing to stand for the Pledge and even acknowledge the flag is remarkable.

Yet it isn’t surprising considering the source.
