Republican State Rep. Brian Lohse spoke out against a bill that protects Iowa children from dangerous and often irreversible sex-change treatments and procedures. The bill would ban such treatments and procedures from being performed on children in Iowa.
Lohse said he has “struggled” with the bill because of his own religious, personal and political views.
He said last summer the motto of many campaigns in Iowa focused on parents and the importance of parental choice.
Lohse said we may not agree with the choices of some parents, but in his opinion, it isn’t his job as a law maker to make a law protecting Iowa kids from these dangerous, harmful practices.
He also expressed concern about children who have already started the process and being forced to stop halfway through.
Finally, there is currently a case centered around a similar law in Arkansas that a court is hearing. Lohse said as soon as the “ink is dry” on this bill there will be an injunction and it will not go into effect until a court rules.
“We have things to do in this House,” Lohse said. “This should not be one of them.”
