One of the elected officials who was able to make it to Wednesday night’s Second Amendment supper was Sen. Chris Cournoyer (R-LeClaire). Cournoyer is a certified firearms instructor and said the fight for Second Amendment rights is vital.

“This issue is never going to go away,” she said. “We’re going to have to always fight and stand up for it.”

It’s important that people get adequate training and understand the responsibility of owning and carrying a firearm, Cournoyer said.

“I believe in people’s right to defend themselves and protect their families,” she said. “I always recommend that people get as much training as people feel that they need and recognize they have some self-awareness there. It’s an important right and I believe in the rights of law-abiding citizens who want to keep and bear arms. I will always support that right.”

With the 2020 election nearing, Second Amendment issues will undoubtedly be at the forefront of some voters’ minds.

“These things come up every year and it’s important that Republicans keep the majority so that we can continue to fight for the right to keep and bear arms,” Cournoyer said. “I think that adding the Second Amendment language to the Iowa Constitution is really important to protect ourselves in the future should something happen at the federal level.”
