As Memorial Day approaches, we salute those who’ve worn the uniform to support our freedom. There are many ways to pay tribute to these patriots. Fly the flag, visit a veterans’ monument or take a quiet walk through your local cemetery, where flags mark the graves of those who served.

Although the Iowa Veterans Cemetery is not hosting its annual event this year, the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs will have a Virtual Memorial Day ceremony at 8 a.m., Monday, May 25. Get complete details and RSVP: Virtual Memorial Day from the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Constructed with federal funds, the State owned-and-operated Iowa Veterans Cemetery is completing its 12th year of operation. It is maintained by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and located 10 miles west of Des Moines along I-80 near Van Meter. It is a beautiful place to visit and full of history if you want to learn more about Iowans’ sacrifices.

No matter where we are on May 25, we can join in the annual National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. A Congressional resolution, passed in 2000, asks all Americans to pause and in their own way, observe a moment of respect to honor those who gave their lives for our country.
